Existing unique customers or new returning visitors? Tricky e-commerce terminology explained

In the slightly opaque world of e-commerce the words ‘new’, ‘existing’, ‘customer’, and ‘unique’ get thrown around rather often and in rather odd combinations. Frequently, their usage is incorrect. Marketers, advertisers and publishers know what they want (generally), but they for sure do not know how to express it.
